Wet rot must be dealt with as it will wholly sap the compel of the lumber. It could also lead to dry rot, which is far harder to eradicate. There are reported cases of dry rot, where the client has not realized there is any question until their foot goes through the floor!
However, it does take a long time for the wood that is exposed to damp or water to positively become irreparable. Any wood that has a moisture content of less than 20% will not attract fungus or rot. And if it goes over this equilibrium and does attract rot, then it may take many months to positively become significant. This is why maintenance, in the form of quarterly checks, is so important.
Wet rot is not always cured by naturally drying out the affected wood, although this is a good first step! The second step is to find out where the source of the water is advent from. If your wood looks brownish, it may be time to get scholar help.
